There’s not a lot that makes me go “America, fuck yeah!” but Thanksgiving is one tradition I’m happy to bring down under. I’ve written before about why it’s my favourite holiday: all food and no bullshit. But I also think it’s nice as we get towards the end of the year to look back on all we have to be thankful for.

We’re all healthy. We have a roof over our heads. Jim and I both have new jobs we love. And Luella is growing up to be a clever and charming little girl.

This year I’m also thankful to have made some great new friends! So for this year’s Thanksgiving we invited over two of them, Ash and Sarah, and their respective families, to join in the festivities. I roomed with these girls in Melbourne during the Babywearing Conference and we cried at Glee together which I think we all know is a bond that can’t be broken.

And I have to say, I think it was my most successful Thanksgiving dinner ever. All my dishes came together well, from the old favourites to the new experiments. The dishes that others brought were a great complement. And while a vegan Thanksgiving may not be the most authentically traditional, I think we did a good job covering all the bases.

Here was our drool-worthy menu:

Mushroom Almond and Tempeh Pies

Roast Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Wholemeal Sage Stuffing

Pumpkin Apple Harvest Rice (made by Sarah)

Candied Sweet Potatoes (made by Ash)

Roast Balsamic Brussels Sprouts

Green Beans with Roasted Cashews and Cranberries (made by Ash)

Triple Mushroom Gravy

Cherry Pomegranate Sauce

Maple Pecan Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream

If anyone wants recipes, let me know. Here’s what I made last year.

We were meant to be celebrating overseas with my parents, but Jim’s recent chest infection prevented us from flying. But we’ve re-scheduled and will be giving it another go tomorrow. I’m mildly terrified about taking a fully-mobile toddler on a 14-hour plane ride, but excited to bring her to America for the first time!
